Enterprise Green Communities Criteria (2011)
According to the Green Communities Criteria, it is meant to promote smart growth
, public health, energy conservation
, operational savings and sustainable building practices in affordable housing design.” The criteria were designed to be aligned with the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED
) Rating System for Homes.
Families significantly below the poverty level have been shown to spend as much as 19% of their income on utility bills, while in some areas of the United States as many as 25% of evictions of low-income renters were due to inability to pay utility bills, which is why incorporating sustainable design elements into affordable housing is so critical.
